Do Giftnote gift cards work with Shopify Markets?

How Giftnote gift cards behave across Shopify Markets, which setup to choose, and the variant name display limitation to plan around.

Yes. Giftnote gift cards are multi-currency compatible with Shopify Markets as of August 2026, and the setup was verified end to end on a live Markets store in September 2026.

You do not need separate gift card products for each market. One gift card product sells in the customer's local currency automatically.

There is one display limitation to plan around, covered below under variant names.

What changed, and why older advice is wrong

Before June 2026, Shopify issued every gift card in the store's base currency. A customer paying £100 on an Australian store received a card issued as $188 AUD. The front end said £100, the ledger held AUD, and the balance moved with the exchange rate. A £100 credit could be worth £90 or £110 a few months later.

Giftnote had no control over that. It was a Shopify Markets constraint on how gift card ledgers work.

Shopify launched local-currency gift cards in June 2026. Giftnote added support in August 2026. If you were told at any point that gift cards only issue in your base currency, that advice is out of date.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Shopify Markets configured with the regions you sell to
  • Giftnote installed, with eGift cards enabled
  • Access to edit your gift card product and its variants
  • Access to your Klaviyo templates, if you send gift card emails through Klaviyo

Which setup should I choose?

There are two ways to run gift cards across markets. Most stores should pick option 1.

Option 1: One gift card product, prices adjusted per region

Keep a single gift card product. Set the price per region inside Shopify Markets. The card sells in the customer's local currency, and the theme, cart and checkout all show that currency.

This is the option most merchants prefer. It keeps one product to maintain, one set of reviews, and one URL to link from your gifting pages.

It has one catch, covered in the next section.

Option 2: A separate gift card product per region

Create an individual gift card product for each market. Each one carries its own currency and its own variant names, so nothing displays incorrectly.

Choose this if you cannot make theme changes, or if your regions need genuinely different denominations rather than converted equivalents.

Why does my gift card still show a dollar sign for UK customers?

Because Shopify does not support dynamic currency symbols inside variant names.

If your variant is named $50, a UK customer sees $50 in the variant dropdown, even though the theme, cart and checkout all correctly show £50. The price is right. The label is wrong.

You have three ways to handle it:

  1. Add a theme code override so the variant display shows the local symbol, such as £50. This gives the cleanest result and needs a developer.
  2. Remove the currency symbol from the variant name. Name your variants 50, 100, 200, 300 and let the price beside them carry the currency. Add a short line on the product page noting that prices reflect the customer's local currency.
  3. Prepend the currency on the product page only, leaving the variant names as plain numbers. Once the item is in the cart, the price already displays correctly.

Option 2 needs no developer and is the fastest to ship before peak season.

Does the currency flow through to Klaviyo?

Yes. The currency flows through to the Giftnote Klaviyo events.

Check that your gift card email templates use the gift card currency merge field rather than a hard-coded symbol. A template with a $ typed into it will show $ to every recipient regardless of the market they bought in.

Run one test purchase per market and read the email that arrives before you go live.

Should I use Shopify Markets or a separate expansion store?

Both work with Giftnote. The decision is not really a gifting decision.

Markets keeps one store, one catalogue and one set of settings. An expansion store gives you full independence per region, including separate Klaviyo accounts, but doubles the setup and maintenance.

Merchants have gone both ways. Some move to a regional expansion store after weighing the overall customer experience; others consolidate onto Markets. If you run an expansion store, install Giftnote on it and clone your Klaviyo flows across; merchants have done this successfully in an afternoon.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a different gift card product for each market?
No. One product sells in the relevant currency automatically. Separate products per region is an option, not a requirement.

If someone buys a gift card in NZD, does the recipient receive it in NZD?
The card is issued in the currency of the purchase under local-currency gift cards. Confirm this on your own store with one test purchase per market before peak, because your result depends on your Markets price settings.

Does the balance still move with the exchange rate?
Not under local-currency gift cards. That behaviour belonged to the old base-currency model described above.

Does multi-currency work for store credit as well as gift cards?
Not confirmed yet. When store credit is created manually in Shopify the currency field is fixed, and we have not yet verified store credit currency behaviour on a live Markets store. Treat store credit across currencies as untested, and contact support before relying on it.

Do promotions that issue a percentage back work across markets?
Not confirmed yet. A percentage-back flow calculates against whatever the customer pays, but the issuing currency depends on your Shopify Flow configuration and your base currency. Test each market before launching a promotion, and state which currency the credit arrives in on the promotional email.

Do I need to change anything in Giftnote itself?
No Giftnote configuration change is required. The work is in your Shopify Markets pricing, your variant names, and your Klaviyo templates.

  • 3. Add eGift Cards
  • Gift Card Not Received by Recipient
  • Gift Card Showing as "Invalid" in the Giftnote Dashboard
  • Klaviyo
