If your gift message widget isn't showing up on your store despite installing Giftnote, you're not alone β€” this is the most common setup issue and is almost always caused by one of five things. This guide walks you through each cause so you can diagnose and fix it yourself.

Most common causes

These are listed in order of how frequently they occur. Start at #1 β€” it resolves the issue for most merchants.

  1. The Giftnote app embed isn't enabled β€” the widget won't render anywhere on your store until this is toggled on.

  2. You recently published a new theme β€” publishing a new Shopify theme resets all app embed settings, including Giftnote.

  3. Your cart drawer requires manual code β€” most cart drawers don't support drag-and-drop widget placement.

  4. Another app is conflicting with the widget β€” apps like Route, Skio, Printful, Govalo, or GiftShip can interfere with widget rendering.

  5. The widget block isn't added to your product page template β€” on Online Store 2.0 themes, the widget block must be placed in the correct template section.

Fix each cause

1. Enable the Giftnote app embed

This is the fix in about 70% of cases. The Giftnote app embed is a master switch β€” if it's off, the gift message widget won't appear on any page of your store.

  1. Open your Shopify admin and go to Online Store β†’ Themes

  2. Click Customize on your live theme

  3. Click the App embeds icon in the left sidebar It looks like a puzzle piece or a grid, near the top of the sidebar.

  4. Find "Giftnote" or "Giftnote Control Panel" in the list and toggle it on

If Giftnote doesn't appear in the App embeds list, the app may not be fully installed. Go to Apps in your Shopify admin and confirm Giftnote is listed as an installed app. If it's missing, reinstall it from the Shopify App Store.

  1. Click Save in the top-right corner of the theme editor

Your gift message widget should appear on your store within 30 seconds. Open a product page in a new browser tab to confirm.

Using Rebuy Smart Cart? The Giftnote app embed must be enabled in your theme settings before the widget will render inside a Rebuy cart. If you enabled Rebuy first, go back and toggle the Giftnote app embed on β€” no other changes are needed.

2. Re-enable the Giftnote app embed after publishing a new theme

Every time you publish a new Shopify theme, all app embed settings reset to their defaults. This means the Giftnote app embed gets turned off β€” even if it was on in your previous theme. This catches a lot of merchants off guard, especially after seasonal theme updates or developer handoffs.

  1. Go to Online Store β†’ Themes β†’ Customize on your currently published theme

  2. Click the App embeds icon in the left sidebar

  3. Toggle Giftnote back on

  4. Click Save

If you had custom CSS styling on your previous theme's gift message widget, you'll need to re-enter it. Open the Giftnote Control Panel section within App embeds and paste your CSS into the custom CSS field.

Tip: Before publishing a new theme in the future, open the unpublished theme in the theme editor first and enable the Giftnote app embed there. That way it's already active the moment the theme goes live.

3. Add the gift message widget to your cart drawer

Cart drawers (also called slide-out carts or side carts) on most themes require a manual code insertion to display the gift message widget. This is different from the product page or checkout, where the widget can be added with drag-and-drop.

If your cart drawer is built into your theme:

This typically requires a small Liquid code edit to your theme files. Contact us at support@giftnote.com with your store URL and a Shopify collaborator access code β€” we'll add the widget to your cart drawer on a staging theme so you can preview it before going live.

Most merchants see a 10–15% increase in gift message volume after adding the widget to the cart drawer, on top of the product page and checkout placements. It's worth doing.

If you're using a third-party cart app (Rebuy, Slide Cart, CartHook):

  1. Confirm the Giftnote app embed is enabled (see Cause 1 above)

  2. Check whether your cart app supports app blocks β€” Rebuy does. If your cart app supports app blocks, add the Giftnote widget block inside the cart app's configuration.

  3. If your cart app doesn't support app blocks, contact us and we'll handle the manual integration.

4. Resolve conflicts with other apps

Certain Shopify apps can interfere with the gift message widget rendering. The most common culprits are:

  • Route β€” shipping protection widget can overlap or block the Giftnote widget

  • Skio β€” subscription logic can interfere with widget display on subscription product pages

  • Printful β€” fulfillment app can conflict with order attribute handling

  • Govalo or Rise.ai β€” competing gift card apps that display their own widgets; having both active simultaneously can cause duplicate or missing widgets

  • GiftShip β€” has its own gift message system that can block Giftnote on the cart page

  • Broadcast theme's built-in "Gift Note" field β€” this native theme feature conflicts directly with the Giftnote app

How to diagnose an app conflict:

  1. Open your store in a private/incognito browser window This eliminates browser extension interference.

  2. Check if the gift message widget appears on a product page If it appears on the product page but not in the cart drawer or checkout, the conflict is likely specific to one surface β€” note which one.

  3. Temporarily disable other apps one at a time Go to Online Store β†’ Themes β†’ Customize β†’ App embeds and toggle off other apps one by one, saving and checking your store each time. When the gift message widget reappears, you've found the conflicting app.

  4. Re-enable the conflicting app and contact us Send us your store URL, the name of the conflicting app, and where the widget isn't appearing. We'll find a fix that lets both apps work together.

If you're using the Broadcast theme: The Broadcast theme has a built-in "Gift Note" field that conflicts with Giftnote. You'll need to hide the native field in your theme settings or template code. Contact us and we'll handle this for you via collaborator access.

Migrating from Govalo or Rise.ai? Deactivate or uninstall the competing app before activating the Giftnote widget on your live theme. Running both simultaneously causes duplicate gift card issuance and widget display conflicts.

5. Add the widget block to your product page template (Online Store 2.0)

On Online Store 2.0 themes (most modern Shopify themes), the gift message widget needs to be added as an app block on the product page template β€” and the Giftnote app embed needs to be on as well.

  1. Go to Online Store β†’ Themes β†’ Customize

  2. Navigate to a product page using the page selector at the top of the editor Click the dropdown that says "Home page" and select Products β†’ Default product.

  3. Click Add block or Add section in the product page template

  4. Search for "Giftnote" and select the Giftnote widget block

If "Giftnote" doesn't appear when you search, confirm that the Giftnote app embed is toggled on (see Cause 1). App blocks only appear when the parent app embed is enabled.

  1. Drag the block to your preferred position β€” most merchants place it directly below the "Add to Cart" button.

  2. Click Save

Multiple product templates? If you use different templates for different product types, you'll need to add the Giftnote widget block to each template where you want the gift message widget to appear. Repeat steps 2–6 for each template.

Still not working?

If none of the above resolved it, try these additional steps:

  1. Clear your browser cache and check in a private/incognito window. Shopify's theme editor aggressively caches assets β€” what you see in your regular browser may be outdated.

  2. Check if you're on a headless Shopify setup. If your storefront is built with Hydrogen, a custom headless framework, or a Webflow-to-Shopify bridge, the standard product page and cart drawer widgets are not compatible. Only the checkout extension widget works on headless stores (Shopify Plus required). Contact us to discuss your options.

  3. Confirm you're checking the live published theme, not a draft. Go to Online Store β†’ Themes and make sure the theme marked "Current theme" is the one where you enabled the Giftnote app embed. If you made changes on an unpublished theme, those changes won't be visible on your live store.

Contact us β€” include your store URL and a screenshot of your App embeds panel (showing Giftnote toggled on) so we can diagnose the issue quickly. We typically resolve widget visibility issues within 24 hours.
