Add a multi-address notice to your Shopify checkout

When a customer places a multi-gift order, Giftnote creates the Shopify checkout and pre-fills it with their billing address, so you receive one order and one invoice.
Shopify sees that pre-filled address and locks it, then displays two of its own messages:
"You can't change your shipping address"
"Your order can only be shipped to this address"
Your customer has just entered 20, 50, maybe 100 recipient addresses. Seeing those messages makes them think their recipients were lost, or that everything is about to ship to one place. Some abandon the order, some email your support team.
These messages are generated by Shopify checkout itself and cannot be turned off from your admin. The fix is to add your own message above them, set to appear only on multi-gift orders.
This takes about 10 minutes.

What you need
Shopify Plus β the app below requires checkout extensibility, which is Plus only
Checkout Blocks app β the free tier covers this. Install it from the Shopify App Store
Upgraded checkout β Settings β Checkout. You cannot be running the legacy checkout.liquid
Giftnote multi-gift live β the notice is triggered by your multi-gift shipping rate
Step 1: Find your multi-gift shipping rate name
The notice is dynamic. It only appears when the delivery method on the checkout matches your multi-gift rate, so normal single-address orders never see it.
To do that, you need the exact rate name.
Go to Settings β Shipping and delivery
Find the rate used for multi-gift orders
Copy the name exactly, including capitals and spacing
The default is Multi Gift Shipping. If you have renamed it, use your name.
Not sure which one it is? Place a test multi-gift order through your Giftnote portal and read the delivery line on the checkout page.
Step 2: Create the block
Go to Apps β Checkout Blocks β Create block.
Block type: Banner
Name:
Multi GiftLocation: Checkout
Step 3: Add the message
Style: Warning (amber)
Collapsible: Off
Title: Corporate/ Multi Address Order?
Content: You can ignore the address and messages below. They relate to billing only. Your gifts are already routed to the recipient addresses you selected and will ship to them individually.
Button label: leave empty
Button URL: leave empty
We recommend using this wording as written. "Billing only" and "already routed" are the two phrases that reliably stop customers worrying.
Step 4: Set the display rule
This is what keeps the notice off your regular orders.
Rules comparison: All conditions must match
Condition: Delivery method title β is equal to β
Multi Gift Shipping
Replace the value with your own rate name if it differs.
Step 5: Position it
Place the block at the top of the checkout, above the express checkout buttons.
It needs to sit above Shopify's own locked-address messages. If it appears below them, the customer reads the confusing message first and the notice does not do its job.
We also recommend enabling it on the Order status and Thank you pages, so the reassurance carries through after payment.
Step 6: Activate and test
Set the block to Active
Place a test multi-gift order through your Giftnote portal with two or more recipients
Confirm the amber notice appears at the top of the checkout
Place a normal single-product order directly on your storefront
Confirm the notice does not appear
Step 4 is easy to skip. Do it anyway, it is the only way to know your rule is working.
Advanced: import the block instead
Checkout Blocks supports JSON import. If your shipping rate is named Multi Gift Shipping, you can import the configuration rather than building it by hand.
{"version":"1.0.1","resource":"block","type":"checkout_static_content","fields":{"name":"Multi Gift","markets_legacy":[],"block_location":"1","is_preview_mode":false,"is_debug_mode":false,"rules_comparison":"all","styles":{},"allowed_locations":["checkout","order_status","thank_you"],"text_title":{"en":""},"status":"ACTIVE","rules":[{"type":"delivery_title","condition":"eq","value":"Multi Gift Shipping","pWhen":"any"}],"content_items":[{"type":"banner","settings":{"title":{"en":"Corporate/ Multi Address Order?"},"content":{"en":"You can ignore the address and messages below. They relate to billing only. Your gifts are already routed to the recipient addresses you selected and will ship to them individually."},"buttonLabel":{"en":""},"buttonUrl":"","status":"warning","collapsible":false}}]} After importing, open the block and check the rule value matches your shipping rate name. If it does not, the notice will never appear.
Not on Shopify Plus?
Checkout Blocks requires checkout extensibility, which is only available on Plus, so this notice cannot be added to your checkout.
Warn the customer on the step before instead. The review page in your Giftnote portal has a rich text widget you can edit, and it is the last thing the customer reads before Shopify takes over. Set the expectation there and the locked address is no longer a surprise.
To edit it, go to your Giftnote language settings and find the rich text field for the review page. Add something like:
On the next page you'll enter your billing details. Shopify will show a single address and say it can't be changed, that's expected. Your recipient addresses are saved and each gift will ship to the person you selected.
Two things worth doing alongside it:
Repeat the same reassurance in your order confirmation email
Brief your support team so they have a ready answer
If a customer asks about it
You can use this reply:
Nothing has gone wrong, your recipient addresses are saved. The address on the payment page is your billing address, which is why Shopify locks it. Your gifts are already routed to the recipients you entered and will ship to them individually. You'll receive a confirmation listing every recipient.
