4. Recipient Details on Gift Cards in Shopify, and Setting an Expiry Date
Gift cards automatically carry recipient details in Shopify — how to view them and set a default expiry period, plus legal considerations to check first.

Shopify gift cards created by Giftnote automatically include recipient details as a Shopify customer profile — there is nothing to enable. This has been the default behaviour since the September update; the "Attach recipient to gift cards" toggle some older documentation refers to has been removed.
Viewing gift card details in Shopify
- Navigate to the gift card section: Go to Shopify > Products > Gift Cards.
- Check existing gift cards: older gift cards, issued before recipient details were attached automatically, may not show recipient details. Gift cards created with Shopify's own native gift card function are the exception.
Because each recipient gets a Shopify customer profile, you can find them in Customers in Shopify and include them in future marketing. On a gift card in the Giftnote app, View in Shopify on the Recipient card opens that customer profile.

Setting an expiry date for gift cards
By default, gift cards do not expire. To set a default expiry:
- In the Giftnote app, go to Settings > Gift Cards > Advanced Settings.
- Find the Expiry card and turn the switch on.
- Enter the validity period using the Years / Months / Days fields.
- Save if a save bar appears.

Important legal considerations
- Compliance with local laws: verify the rules for the countries where your store operates before setting an expiry. Some regions make it illegal for a gift card to expire before a minimum period. Make sure your settings comply to avoid legal issues.
