4. Upselling and Charging for Giftnote at Checkout on Shopify Plus
How Shopify Plus merchants create a gift message surcharge product, add the Gift Message checkout block, and link the product under Gift Orders advanced settings.

You can upsell and charge customers for a Giftnote message at checkout if you are using Shopify Plus. Follow these steps to set up this feature and start monetizing the gift message option.
Checkout UI extensions on the Information / Shipping / Payment steps — the steps this feature uses — are Shopify Plus-only. Non-Plus merchants should use the developer-led setup instead.
Step 1: Create a digital product for the upsell
- Create the product. In your Shopify admin, create a new product specifically for the Giftnote upsell, for example Gift Message. Giftnote doesn't need a particular vendor: it uses the variant you select in Step 3. If you want to filter the product out of your theme, packing slips and emails, give it a vendor or tag you'll recognise (see the Pre-Launch Checklist).
- Make it digital. Uncheck "This is a physical product".
- Set the price you want to charge customers.
- Publish the product so it can be purchased, but hide it from your storefront (see the Pre-Launch Checklist).
Example settings can be seen below.

Step 2: Add the Gift Message checkout block
- Go to Shopify > Settings > Checkout and click Customize to open the checkout editor.
- At the bottom of the checkout editor, select Add app block and choose Gift Message. This is the Giftnote widget that lets customers add a gift message.
- If you use Shop Pay: In the checkout editor, select the Gift Message block and, under Checkout behavior, make sure Include block in Shop Pay is on. When you test in Step 4, run one checkout with Shop Pay and check the gift message option appears.

Do not add the block named [DEPRECATED] Gift Message — that's the old, frozen v1 widget (previously called "Checkout Message"). If you already have it placed, replace it with the current Gift Message block. There is no separate "Gift Order Surcharge" block any more. The current Gift Message block handles the surcharge using the variant you select in Step 3: it adds one marked surcharge line when a gift message is present, and removes it when the message is removed.
Step 3: Link the digital product to the upsell
- In the Giftnote app, go to Settings > Gift Orders and click Advanced settings.
- In the Surcharge & visibility card (Shopify Plus), select the variant of the digital product you created in Step 1 as the surcharge product.
- Save if a save bar appears.
Step 4: Test the checkout process
- Perform a quick test:
- Go through checkout and add a gift message.
- Verify that the digital product (the upsell) is added as one surcharge line item, confirming that customers will be charged for the Giftnote.
- Remove the gift message and check the surcharge line is removed too.
- If you use Shop Pay, repeat the test with Shop Pay.

Step 5: Customize Giftnote widget labels (optional)
- Consider editing the labels in the Giftnote checkout widget to clearly explain that a surcharge will apply when a gift message is added. Go to Settings > Gift Orders, click Configure, open the design used for Checkout widget and select the Checkout tab.

If you want the surcharge line item to fulfil itself automatically (so it doesn't sit as "unfulfilled" alongside your real order items), turn on the setting that marks the surcharge item as fulfilled automatically, in Settings > Gift Orders > Advanced settings. See the Pre-Launch Checklist for the rest of the store-hygiene steps (hiding the product from collections, excluding it from packing slips and Klaviyo).
Selling through a multi-gift storefront?
Multi-gift storefronts have their own, separate fee. Go to Settings > Multi Gifts, click Edit on the storefront, open Pricing and use the Message Fee card (Charge a message fee, with Include in Child Orders). It is set per storefront and is not limited to Shopify Plus. It does not replace the checkout surcharge above.
Additional options for non-Shopify Plus users
If you are not using Shopify Plus, you can still implement this upsell with the help of a developer. By adding JavaScript code to your theme, you can trigger the upsell in the cart. For an example of how this works, check out this product page: Aussie Animals Magnetic Play Set. See Charging Customers for Giftnote (Developer Setup) for the approach.

Additional tips
- Covering costs and profitability: This upsell can help cover the cost of using the Giftnote app and potentially generate additional profit. You can educate your customers that this service acts like a "gift concierge," similar to paying for gift wrapping in a physical store.
