1. How Multi Gift Works
How a multi-gift order flows from one master draft order through payment and tax to per-recipient orders and delivery tracking.

Multi Gift is built for businesses sending multiple gifts to clients, teams, or event guests in one seamless flow. Here's how it works.

Select products and customise the message
The customer selects a product (e.g. Star Wars keychains) and adds optional extras like:
- A printed card (a printed-only message on the packing slip, if the storefront offers it)
- A digital message (sent on delivery)
They can personalise each message using a CSV upload — allowing custom notes for every recipient.
Upload recipient details
The customer downloads a CSV template and fills in each recipient's details. Giftnote:
- Validates the data
- Populates the order
- Pulls shipping rates from Shopify (live)
If there are issues (e.g. invalid phone numbers or undeliverable regions), errors are shown for correction.
Add multiple carts (optional)
If the storefront has Multiple carts turned on, customers can create separate carts for different gift types. When it is off, they get a single cart. For example:
- Cart 1: Star Wars keychains with printed cards
- Cart 2: Branded hoodies, no extras
Each cart has its own CSV upload. Giftnote combines them into one order and calculates shipping and tax per group.
Apply discounts and calculate tax
If applicable, automatic discounts are applied based on order value.
Giftnote uses the tax values Shopify calculates from your Shopify tax settings — the same engine Shopify uses to price any other order. If tax is required, a line item is added before checkout.
Add customer and billing details
The customer enters their name, email, phone number, and billing address — used to create the Shopify draft order.
Note: Delivery addresses are already linked via the CSV uploads.
Submit the order
After submission, the customer sees a confirmation and receives an email.
You (the merchant) can:
- Review the full order
- Approve it, if Require your approval before recipient orders are created is on (Settings > Multi Gifts > Advanced settings)
- Make edits through the Giftnote portal
Payment
The customer pays for the order in Shopify.
After payment
After payment is completed:
- The main order is paid in Shopify. If Cancel the main order once it's paid is on (Settings > Multi Gifts > Advanced settings, on by default), Giftnote then cancels the main order on Shopify without restocking.
- Individual orders are created for each recipient, all sharing one family code tag so you can find the whole group in Shopify
- These orders are fulfilled as normal. Ship from the recipient orders, not the main order.
- Giftnote sends digital gift messages on delivery
See Updating Shopify Reporting for Multi Gift for how the main order and recipient orders appear in your reports.
Track delivery and messages
After checkout, the customer sees the Gift progress widget on your thank-you and order status pages, showing how their gifts are progressing. You add the widget in Shopify under Settings › Checkout, and change its wording or turn it off under Settings > Multi Gifts > Gift progress widget.
