9. Increase Your Shopify Billing Spend Cap

Raise your Giftnote spend limit before a busy season so gift messages keep going out: from Settings → Subscription or your Shopify billing settings, plus how much to set.

Shopify caps how much Giftnote can charge you in usage fees each billing period. If you hit that cap, new gift messages stop going out until the charge goes through. Raise it before your busy season so nothing waits.

The Settings menu. Your plan and spend limit are under Subscription.

Before you start

  • You need to be the store owner, or a staff member with billing permissions in Shopify.
  • Check your current limit in Giftnote under Settings → Subscription. It's shown as Spend limit.

Why this matters

When your Giftnote usage fees reach the limit, new gift messages are paused. Customers still see the widget and still write their messages, but the messages don't go out. They send once the charge goes through, at the start of your next billing period or after you raise the limit.

High-volume stores usually hit the limit during Black Friday/Cyber Monday, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day or Christmas, when a delay hurts most.

Giftnote emails your Primary Contact about billing issues such as the limit getting close. Check that person can act on it in Settings → Profile & Contacts.

Steps

The quickest way is from Giftnote: go to Settings → Subscription and click Change spend limit.

To change it in Shopify instead:

  1. In Shopify admin, click Settings (bottom-left).
  2. Click Billing. If you don't see Billing, your staff account doesn't have billing permissions. Ask the store owner to give you access or do these steps.
  3. Click View all subscriptions.
  4. Click Giftnote. If it isn't listed, Giftnote may be uninstalled or your plan may not be active. Reinstall it from the Shopify App Store and choose a plan, or chat with us using the chat button in the help centre or in the app, or email support@giftnote.com.
  5. Click View spending limit (on some Shopify versions it's Approve usage charges).
  6. Enter a higher amount. See below for how much.
  7. Click Save.

How much to set

Your plan includes 20 credits. After that, Giftnote charges $1.00 per gift message and $1.00 per gift card. Multi Gift orders (Professional plan) add to your usage too. Legacy and custom plans keep their own rates. Your rates are listed in Settings → Subscription.

  1. In Giftnote, set the date range on Home or Analytics to your busiest month in the past year and note the Spend figure.
  2. Multiply it by 2 or 3 to allow for a peak-season spike.
  3. Set that as your new limit.

Example: your busiest month had 800 gift orders at $1 each, so $800. Set your limit to at least $1,600–$2,400.

Set it higher than you think you need. A high limit costs nothing. You only pay for what you use.

When to check your spend limit

Check it at least 8 weeks before each of these:

  • Black Friday / Cyber Monday (late November)
  • Christmas and the holiday season (December)
  • Valentine's Day (February)
  • Mother's Day (second Sunday in May in the US)
  • Any big sale, launch or corporate gifting push

You're done when...

Settings → Subscription in Giftnote (and your Shopify billing page) shows the new spend limit.

If you'd already hit the limit before raising it, chat with us using the chat button in the help centre or in the app, and we'll check for gift messages that didn't send.
