10. Gift Card Only Implementation

Use Giftnote for gift cards only: set up the gift card product in Shopify, then confirm Giftnote detects it on the Gift Card Products page.

Giftnote can be used for gift cards only, without the gift message widgets. After the app has been installed and activated in your theme, set up a Giftnote gift card product in Shopify, then check that Giftnote detects it.

Settings → Gift Cards, where you add the gift card widgets to your theme.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Giftnote installed and the Giftnote app embed activated in your theme
  • Access to edit products in your Shopify admin
  • The gift card amounts you want to sell, for example 25, 50, 100

Giftnote does not work with Shopify's own native gift card products. If you already have one, you need a separate Giftnote gift card product.

Accessing Shopify products

All Giftnote gift cards, and any gift cards not managed by Shopify, are set up in the Shopify product admin. From your Shopify admin, select Products.

Creating a new gift card for Giftnote

  1. Add a product. Select Add product at the top right of the page.
  2. Enter the gift card details. Add the title, description and product image. The description can be styled with HTML, including bold, italics and underline. The image displays like your other product images on the site, so use a similar image size.
  3. Turn off shipping. In the Shipping and Inventory sections, turn off the physical product option. We also recommend turning off Track inventory.
  4. Add the amounts as variants. Scroll down to Variants and add a new option. Enter an option name such as Amount and set the values to match your gift card values. More value fields appear as you fill each one in. Check the values carefully, because the store displays them exactly as you enter them.
  5. Tidy up the values if needed. Drag the dots on the left of a value to rearrange it, or use the bin on the right to delete it. Be careful with the bin next to the option name, which deletes the whole option.
  6. Set the variant prices. Once all values are set, scroll down to the variant list and set each price to match its variant value. The selected variant price is the amount the gift card is issued for.
  7. Publish the product. Scroll to the top of the page and set the status to Active.
  8. Save the product before you leave the page.

Selling in more than one currency?
Gift cards are issued in the currency the customer checks out in. Set fixed gift card prices for each market in Shopify Markets, not in Giftnote. Otherwise Shopify converts the price and the issued amount can be an uneven exchange-rate value.

To let shoppers buy the gift card straight from the product page, add Giftnote's gift card block in the theme editor. See 4. Add eGift Cards.

Modifying an existing gift card

If your store already has a gift card product, first make sure it is not a Shopify gift card product. Giftnote does not work with those.

  1. Open the product. From Shopify Products, select the gift card product. Use the search icon on the right of the list to narrow the results.
  2. Check the product category. On the product page, look at Product category on the right. If it is set to Gift Cards and cannot be edited, it is a Shopify gift card and will not work with Giftnote.

Create a new Giftnote gift card product from scratch, as in the steps above, rather than converting an existing product.

In Giftnote, Settings > Gift Cards > Products marks Shopify native gift card products as Shopify gift card — not supported, so you can also spot them there.

Checking that Giftnote detects your gift card

  1. Open Giftnote. In your Shopify admin sidebar, under Apps, select Giftnote.
  2. Go to the gift card products list. Select Settings > Gift Cards, then Manage gift card products in the Products card.
  3. Find your product. The list shows every gift card product Giftnote detects, with its vendor and status. If everything is set up correctly, your new gift card product shows as Active. Select Refresh if you have just created it. Giftnote uses the products configured on this page. It doesn't need a particular vendor name.

My gift card product shows as Inactive. What does that mean?
Inactive products will not process new gift cards correctly. The page doesn't show the reason. Open the product with Open in Shopify and check it against the steps above. If it still shows as Inactive, chat with us using the chat button in the app or in the help centre, or email support@giftnote.com.

My gift card product is not in the list.
Select Refresh. Products that look like Giftnote gift cards but have not been added yet appear under Detected products on the same page. If your product is there but not in your gift card products list, chat with us and we'll help you add it.
