12. Set up gift cards for Shopify Markets

Step-by-step setup for selling one Giftnote gift card product in each Shopify Markets region's currency, fixing variant names and testing before you go live.

Follow these steps to sell one Giftnote gift card product in each Shopify Markets region's own currency. Giftnote issues each card in the currency the customer paid in. For background and quick answers, see Do Giftnote gift cards work with Shopify Markets?.

Settings → Gift Cards.

You do all of this in Shopify, one region at a time. Nothing changes in Giftnote.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • Shopify Markets set up with the regions you sell to
  • A Giftnote gift card product (see Add eGift Cards)
  • Access to edit your gift card product and its variants
  • Access to your Klaviyo templates, if you send gift card emails through Klaviyo

Set up your gift card for each region

  1. Add the gift card product to each region. A new product often sells only in your base currency. In Shopify, add it to the catalog (the products and prices a market sells) for every region you want to sell gift cards in.
  2. Set a local price for each variant. Open the region's catalog, find the gift card product, and set each variant's price in that currency. For example, set the $50 variant to £50 for the UK. You can use a matching number or a converted amount.
  3. Repeat for every region.
  4. Preview your store as a customer in that region. Switch your store to that country. The product page, cart and checkout should all show the local currency.
  5. Check your variant names. A variant named with a currency symbol, such as $50, shows that symbol in every region. Pick one of the fixes in the next section.

Fix variant names that show the wrong currency

Variant names are plain text saved on the product, and Shopify doesn't convert them. A variant called $50 reads $50 to a UK customer, even though the price shows £50. The customer still pays the right amount. Only the label is wrong. Any of these three fixes works.

Option 1: Keep one product and update your theme

Keep a single gift card product for every region, and change your theme so the variant labels show the customer's currency, such as £50 in the UK. You keep one product to maintain, but it needs a theme code change, usually by a developer.

Rules:
- Only change how this product's variant options are displayed.
- Don't change prices, other products or checkout.
- Tell me which theme files you changed and how to undo it.

Option 2: Create a separate gift card product for each region

Duplicate your gift card product once per region. Name each copy's variants in that region's currency, then publish each copy only to its own region. No code needed and every label is right, but you have more products to maintain.

Option 3: Use numbers only in variant names

Rename your variants 50, 100, 200 and so on. The price shown beside each variant carries the currency. This is the quickest fix: no code, and you keep one product.

Check your Klaviyo templates

Giftnote includes the currency in its Klaviyo events, so your emails can show the right currency for each region.

Make sure your gift card email templates use the gift card currency merge field, not a typed symbol. A template with $ typed into it shows $ to every recipient, whichever region they bought in. See Klaviyo flow templates and event reference.

Test each region before you go live

  1. Make one test purchase per region. Buy a gift card while your store is set to that region's country.
  2. Check the gift card's currency. Giftnote should issue the card in the currency you paid in, at the price you set for that region.
  3. Read the email that arrives. The amount and currency symbol should match the region you bought in.
